Sounds Of The Onyx highlights rare jazz recordings from the Prohibition era in the 1920s, remixed by a handful of hip hop producers. DJ Jazzy Jeff, Shafiq Husayn, Tall Black Guy, Om’Mas Keith and JayCeeOh & B-Sides take on vintage 1920s jazz recordings, to embody the spirit of musical fusion, lyrical signification and cultural revolution.

Pete Rock’s contribution is an exception: he remixed a track from the official Boardwalk Empire soundtrack, as Sounds Of The Onyx is a promo-only project to complement the current season of the hit series with Steve Buscemi.

The featured producers worked off of original recordings from prohibition-era legends Eva Taylor & Clarence Williams’ Blue Five, Ethel Waters, Lloyd Scott & His Orchestra, Jim Jackson and Charlie Johnson’s Paradise Ten Orchestra.
