Fans were anticipating it for quite a while: ‘The Grown Folks Table’, the new solo record by Arrested Development frontman Speech. While AD’s new album ‘Strong’ is on its way, we selected a new track off Speech latest solo record.
Info
Speech (real name: Todd Thomas) is a singer/rapper from Milwaukee, Wisconson (USA). In 1988 he founded the group Arrested Development, whose debut ‘3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the life of…’ (the time they didn’t have a record label) was critically acclaimed by fans and critics. It’s hard to find a hip hop head, or even a music fan, who never heard their feel good hits ‘Tennessee‘, ‘People Everyday’ or ‘Mr. Wendal’. After a long break, AD released ‘Since The Last Time’ in 2006. Later this year the new album ‘Strong’ drops.
Solo
Next to AD’s musical career, Speech also released several albums on his own. With soulful songs as ‘Redemption Song’ (Bob Marley cover), ‘Like Marvin Gaye Said‘, ‘Clocks In Sync With Mine’ and more, Speech’ solo discography is very consistent.
Music
Because his solo album recently dropped and because AD’s brand new album is coming up, Speech shared one track off ‘The Grown Folks Table’ with us. The track’s called ‘An Impact’ and compared to his more soulful material, this song sticks more to the boom bap kind of sound.
Ode
In an old interview with The Find Magazine, Speech says the following: “I love the days of hip hop when people had something to say, because they knew this music is powerful and effective in changing the world! That’s the school that I’m from. (…) ‘The Grown Folks Table’ is my ode to hip hop and lyricism.” This track is definitely a prolong of that.

Extra
A comeback isn’t always a good idea. Arrested Development tried it with the anticipated album ‘Since The Last Time’ in 2006, proving that it is possible to release a good album after such a long time. Songs as ‘Since The Last Time‘, ‘Heaven’ and ‘Miracles’ made the long wait more than worth it. And this year they are back again with the album ‘Strong’. The group already released a couple of new official videos to promote the upcoming release:
