Art: Rammellzee: The Equation, The Letter Racers Exhbition
One of the most eccentric and revered forefathers of hip hop and street art culture was the late Rammellzee (RIP). His inimitable ‘gothic futurist’ style helped construct a foundation for the next generation of urban artists, handing off the reins to a chariot of artistic expression with infinite possibilities.
Cooped up in his pangalactic lair and workspace, The Battlestation, he spent upwards of 15 years creating spacecraft like sculptures called Letter Racers. These otherwordly artifacts are for the first time ever being displayed in New York City by the good people at the Suzanne Geiss Company. The exhibition is on from March 8th until April 21st and presents a unique opportunity to experience the brilliant mind of a legendary artist. So head over to the Suzanne Geiss Company at 76 Grand Street in New York City and check it out!
Each sculpture represent a letter of the alphabet and is constructed from found objects, spray paint, plexiglass, and corrugated form core atop customized skateboards. In appropriate Rammellzee style, the found objects range from Olde English 800 Malt Liquor bottle caps to umbrella handles to his wifes birth control pill packaging. This looks like an amazing exhibition and a wonderful homage to a pioneer of hip hop culture. I urge any of you living or visitin New York City in the next month or so to take a trip to this exhibition and enjoy it for me since I live way too far away to check it out.
